Grade level checker

Find out what US school grade level your writing is aimed at. Shorter sentences and simpler words lower the grade level, making text more accessible. The Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level is widely used in education and publishing.

How it works

The tool counts words, sentences, and syllables from your pasted text. Syllables are approximated by counting vowel groups per word and subtracting silent trailing ‘e’. The Flesch formulas use average sentence length (ASL = words ÷ sentences) and average syllables per word (ASW = syllables ÷ words). Reading time divides the word count by the words-per-minute rate. Frequently asked questions

What grade level should my writing be?
For general web content and blogs, aim for grade 6–8. News articles typically target grade 8. Academic writing is often grade 12+. Plain-language guidelines recommend grade 8 or below for public-facing content.
How do I lower my grade level?
Use shorter sentences and simpler words. Break long sentences into two. Replace multi-syllable words with shorter synonyms. Active voice helps too.
Is a lower grade level always better?
Not always. Technical or academic writing for expert audiences can justify higher grade levels. The goal is to match the grade level to your target audience.
