How it works

The tip amount is calculated as bill × (tip percentage / 100). Each person's tip is tip amount divided by number of guests; each person's total is (bill + tip) divided by guests. The round-up option applies Math.ceil() to each person's total and derives the adjusted total from there. All arithmetic runs in JavaScript in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate tip per person?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage to get the total tip. Divide both the tip and the bill by the number of people to get each person's share. For example: a £60 bill with 20% tip = £12 tip total, or £3 tip each for 4 people.
What is the standard tip percentage?
In the UK, a tip of 10–15% is common for table service. In the US, 15–20% is standard, with 18–20% expected in most restaurants. This calculator supports any percentage from 0 to 100.
What does rounding up per person do?
The round-up option rounds each person's share up to the nearest whole number. This makes cash splitting easier and slightly increases the total tip given to the server.
